The Radio Industry
'Radio, what's new? Radio, someone still loves you!' once belted Queen in 1984, even earlier in 1979 The Buggles proclaimed that 'video killed the radio star', yet, despite the Radio Joint Audience Research company announcing that 47.8 million adults or 89.3% of the adult (15+) UK population tuned in to their selected radio stations each week in the first quarter of 2015 (down by approximately 50,000 adults on the last Quarter of 2014) the total average number of weekly hours listened to radio for this quarter is still 1.02 Billion.
Digital platforms have allowed radio to still stay current and relevant to today's generation, according to RAJAR 'listening to radio via a digital platform in terms of weekly reach* exceeds over half of the UK (adults 15+) population. With 28.6 million people now tuning in to radio via a digitally enabled receiver (DAB, DTV, Online) each week.' Social media has also allowed radio stations to still reach the younger generation with '44% of 15-24 year old Social Media users claiming to receive updates about their favourite Radio Station/Presenter.'
Radio, it seems is more alive than dead and so provides a wealth of opportunity to be involved not only as a presenter, but as a producer, broadcast assistant, editor, and marketing manager to name but a few.
